He woke up, it wasn’t just a dream, as 25,000 will go live this week.

While I have never claimed to be a “jobs” SEO expert, I’ve had several conversations the past couple of months with recruiting industry peers and there continues to be a lot of confusion and questions about what goals Direct Employers is trying to accomplish with the .jobs domain.

No, it’s not a late April fools joke.  The millions of pages online from other job boards and career sites apparently aren’t enough, as Direct Employers is moving into a joint venture with Employ Media and and will be adding tens of thousands of dot-jobs boards and pages.

In a post written 3 months ago, “Rest In Peace .jobs“, there were 10 reasons outlining the lack of adoption since the .jobs inception over 4 years ago.  Although there was no official funeral, one could classify the latest announcement as a rebirth given the rules of the game (.jobs) are changing completely from what it was intended to be.

Talk to most corporate or agency recruiting leaders and you’ll likely hear the same thing regarding recruiting budgets for 2010…  Flat from 2009.  A majority of firms reduced their budgets in 2009, so the definition of flat is still down from 2 years ago.  While experts predict retention will be the #1 problem organizations face once the economy turns, this makes the budget situation an interesting dilemma.

Here are a variety of ways to make the most of your recruiting budget in 2010, and help position you for the predicted hiring increase:

  • Self fund new initiatives. Assess your processes, identify breakdowns and unnecessary steps, and fix them.  With the savings or increased productivity, you should be in a position to fund new opportunities so you don’t find yourself behind your competition.

Even though job aggregator sites and  job search engines have been around for years now, they have a significant number of challenges that come along with the benefits.  The irony is… almost all claim to be the largest, the first, have the most jobs, etc.  We’d expect that, right?

What you might not expect is what you find when you take a closer look at what’s happening.

The Good:

  • For candidates, you get to go to one site and search jobs that are online everywhere, from job boards and search firms, to corporate career sites.
  • For recruiters, there is an opportunity to beat out the competition with the bidding model (pay-per-click) which is fairly common.  In addition to that, you can typically send these sites a XML feed of your jobs so you don’t need to post them, saving you time.  You also get candidates directly to your site, bypassing the rest of the garbage (explained further below).

Search engines have made a significant impact to Human Resources and Recruiting.  As an example, the last statistic I saw was 4-5 million job related searches are conducted every day.  HR and Recruiting professionals also use search engines for a variety of job related reasons including researching vendors to reading hot topics on blogs.  Thanks to TalentBar, that has become more convenient.
